What is Community Watershed Partnership?Community Watershed Partnership - river

Community Watershed Partnership (CWP) is holistic conservation initiative which engages

locals, land managers and agencies in neighborhoods throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Neighbors helping neighbors is not a new concept, but one that is worth revisiting.  Over the next few years, CWP projects will be initiated throughout Lake Tahoe communities, informing residents of projects, and engaging community members through conservation events, trainings and stewardship days.  Through knowledge and conservation incentives, the Tahoe Basin can be restored and preserved for current and future generations.

Federal, state, local and YOU are needed to help protect Lake Tahoe

It takes many partners to help keep our neighborhoods safe, healthy and sustainable for our families, wildlife and a beautiful environment...
Funding for large environmental projects is increasingly difficult to secure for Lake Tahoe and other natural treasures, making community support and action more important than ever. Recent and ongoing projects include stormwater projects to reduce fine sediments, defensible space improvements, and recreational enhancements.

Tahoe locals can pitch in...by installing BMPs to mitigate erosion and runoff, replacing invasive plants with native and adapted plants, and keeping up with defensible space work.  Through CWP, Tahoe RCD, NTCD and our partners can help!  Spend a few minutes and help us better serve the community - by taking our quick survey!

By being a partner in YOUR neighborhood, there are many potential benefits, including:

•   Informing public agencies and public land managers about what’s important to you,

whether that means improved defensible space, better trail connectivity, or more community       open space

•   Providing input on current and upcoming conservation projects in your neighborhood or             watershed

•   Identifing what's important to your community, helping agencies to implement projects more         holistically

•   Improving water quality, wildlife habitat  and defensible space near your home through                  community stewardship workdays and volunteer efforts

•   Implementing conservation landscaping strategies on your property, including BMPs (Best           Management Practices), invasive species control, and native plants.

Why is holistic planning at the watershed level important?

Although the Tahoe Basin is ultimately seen as a single watershed, each of the 63 tributaries that flow into Lake Tahoe make up sub-watershed areas that encompass communities, public lands, jurisdictions, home-owner associations and residents. Each of these areas has its own unique history, natural resource characteristics and challenges to consider when planning or implementing   environmental improvement projects. Therefore, the activities conducted

within each sub-watershed area also affect the clarity and environmental

integrity of Lake Tahoe, "the jewel of the Sierra."
