BMP MAINTENANCE

The BMP Retrofit Ordinance requires that BMPs are maintained and remain functional over time. Infiltration systems will fill in with sediment and fail to work properly; it is recommended that you visually check your BMPs after major storms, in the spring, and just before winter.

COMMON MAINTENANCE PRACTICES:

Mulch

  • Maintaining an adequate organic mulch layer to cover bare soil is key to minimizing erosion. As mulches are worn away by decomposition and foot traffic, it is important to add more mulch to keep the layer about one to two inches deep.

Gravel trenches and infiltration systems

  • Remove pine needles and any other matter that has collected on top of the system
  • Remove gravel from the system and sift with wire mesh to remove sediment
  • Rinse gravel
  • Line excavated area with new or cleaned filter fabric
  • Refill with sifted, clean gravel, leaving 3" open space on top
  • Cover rock with filter fabric and the last 3" of gravel
  • Place recovered fine sediments in bordered planter bed or other contained area and cover with mulch
  • Discard dirty water and sediment in a contained area such as a planter bed

Vegetated Areas

  • Vegation must be healthy in order to provide for adequate filtration, nutrient uptake, and erosion control. Regular watering may be required until vegetation is established.
  • Soil between plants should be covered with one to two inches of mulch to protect soil, insulate plant roots, and conserve moisture.

Slotted Channel Drains and Conveyance Swales

  • Visually inspect drains and swales after each storm to make sure they are not clogged with debris.
  • Remove debris as necessary. For drains with non-removable grates, use a vacuum to remove debris and sediment. Flushing with a high-pressure washer or hose is not recommended, as this can easily clog the associated infiltration system.

Remember, any debris or sediment removed from a conveyance or infiltration system should be deposited in a contained area on the property, and stabilized so it will be unaffected by wind or water.
